In 1986 Maastricht got a new provincial headquarters on an island of the river Maas. The building has since then become a landmark, among others because it is the place where the Treaty of Maastricht was signed in 1992. To accommodate groups that visit the building, an exhibition about the building and the institution was setup in one of the long hallways, right on the spot where the building crosses a side arm of the river Maas. We decided to use materials already used in the building. We covered the walls and ceiling with teakwood, referring to bookcases and archives but also to create a contrast to the white, long corridors, inviting to take a moment of reflection. By looking out of the windows onto the water one sees poems of the local languages: Looking towards Belgium, French and German, looking to the north, Dutch and Limburg Dialect.
